faces of mind  presents around 200 works by renowned artists from five decades. Painting, sculpture, drawing and photography that interpret the head not as a classical portrait, but as a field of experimentation between form, emotion and identity. In collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research and the Hertie Foundation, the exhibition explores the connections between art and neuroscience and offers a high-calibre accompanying programme.

The exhibition project faces of mind at HAUS. KUNST. MITTE. is dedicated to the most visible part of the invisible – the human head and face. It is the place where the inner takes shape: a resonance chamber for mental states, a projection surface for emotion, memory and sensation.

The works gathered here reflect fear and hope, vulnerability and dignity, loneliness, anger, ecstasy, tenderness and pain. The face is both a stage and a mystery. It reveals and conceals. It reveals the sensitivities of the soul, while at the same time being able to veil them. The theme of the exhibition unfolds in this tension between expression and mystery: art as an attempt to show the invisible. 

The works on display come mainly from the private collection of Drs. Carmen and Dietmar Peikert and the PECADI Art Foundation they founded, supplemented by works from artist friends and collectors.
